Dr Shantha Sinha : SHELTER
Chairperson, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, India. Padma Shri. Founder: Mamidipudi Venkatarangaiya Foundation. Professor: HyderabaD Central University. Recipient: Ramon Magsaysay Award. Recipient: Albert Shanker International Award. A Child Rights activist, her contribution to a phenomenal reduction in child labour in nearly 500 villages of the Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh is perhaps unparalleled.
There is no doubt. Haunted is a haunting book.
Through its depiction of the minds of the children, the parents and the deep-rooted effect of the home, Haunted speaks of the imperative need to protect the children by keeping their mothers safe and secure.
The stories of Haunted are equally chilling, for they speak of the ways in which young minds are destroyed.
And yet Haunted speaks of hope — through suggestions and an overall perspective of how to keep ourselves and our children happy in the most trying of circumstances, not by grand gestures but with small and continued efforts.
This book is commendable in its efforts to look at problems practically and in the way it finds solutions in a most holistic way. As Chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Children’s Rights, I congratulate Rashmi Anand and Charu WaliKhanna in the way they have brought out this book which can be seen as a handbook to help solve the issues related to children.
I hope this book receives the recognition and accolades that it deserves.
